With the current mysterious happenings and the discovery of ‘something’ two miles under the ice in Antarctica, as far back as 1939 rumours were rife about the Nazis building a secret base in the frozen wastes of the Arctic.
In 1938, just prior to WW2, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd visited Hamburg was invited to participate in a 1938/1939 Antarctic Expedition, by the Nazis.
Although Byrd knew the area well, having been on several expeditions and flown over it often, he turned down the offer.
So in December 1938 the German freighter Schwabenland, capable of carrying and catapulting aircraft, left for Antarctica without Admiral Byrd.
The expedition consisted of 33 members, who arrived in January 1939 and began charting the territory.
Around fifteen flights were made by the ship’s two aircraft over an area of around 600,000 square kilometres, according to some reports, half this size if you believe other sources.
The claims of mapping the territory are largely discounted as, of the more than 16,000 aerial photographs that were taken, most are considered useless as they consist of endless white images with no indications of where they were taken.
Rumour had it, that the Nazis were reconnoitring the Antarctic with a view to setting up a secret base for advanced weapon and flight experiments as well as a site for a ‘hideout’ if the war went against them.
What the Nazi expedition supposedly did discover, were several areas with lakes and vegetation and not the icy wastes you would have expected caused, said the geologists in the team, by underground hot springs.
When news of these areas of green grass and fresh water reached Nazi High Command, Heinrich Himmler made plans to build a permanent base in Antarctica, which they code named, ‘Station 211’.
In 1943, Admiral Karl Doenitz announced the completion of Station 211 in a statement, “The German submarine fleet is proud of having built for the Fuhrer, in another part of the world, a Shangri-La on land, an impregnable fortress”.
Did they build the base in Antarctica and not the Artic?
After the end of World war 2, Admiral Richard Byrd mounted Operation Highjump, which was a United States Navy campaign conducted in Antarctica.
The Top Secret mission lasted from 1946 until 1947, and was the single greatest effort in the southernmost continent and continues to be, to this day, the largest Antarctic voyage ever undertaken.
This enormous peacetime force was carried out by 13 vessels and 23 aircraft along with a complement of 4,700 men, a military exercise with military personnel.
In the absence of information to the contrary, it would appear that it was launched specifically to try to discover the whereabouts of this last base of the Nazi’s, although no actual files have ever been released concerning the mission.
Operation Highjump remains Top Secret and we can only guess that anything that is still not open to public scrutiny 75 years after the event, must have been one hell of a secret!
Then in 1995 on the Art Bell radio show, a person was interviewed purporting to be Admiral Byrd’s grandson.

Harley Byrd claims to have his grandfather’s unpublished diaries, which he says were started when Admiral Byrd was returning from his first North pole flight that took place close to Iceland.
In it, he is supposed to have seen, depending on whose version you read, green grassland, lakes, mammoths, cities and a hole, which is the entrance to a world in the centre of the earth.
And all this, in the centre of ice of the North pole!

There are certainly other rumours that refuse to fade away, that a spy satellite detected a metal structure two miles beneath the ice in Antarctica.
US sources say that the news was covered up by the US military and questions were said to have been asked by an assistant to Nicole Fontaine who at the time, was the European Parliament’s French president.
Ms Fontaine is said to have said, “f not, then it’s something that’s at least 12,000 years old, which is how long ice has covered Antarctica. That would make it the oldest man-made structure on the planet. The Pentagon should heed the calls of Congress and release whatever its hiding”.
Similarly, I have no firm evidence for this, except it can be traced back to just one website.
That to me is not a basis for saying that the story looks to be true.
With anything like that, I suggest you read about it if it interests you, and then make your own mind up.
