We are told that the Neolithic Revolution occurred when cave dwelling Fred and Wilma learned about planting crops and also realised that animals could be domesticated, meaning that people could stay in one place instead of wandering around following the pigs and cattle that were their main food source.
This led to the start of civilisation as we know it and living in mud huts became the desired residence, all taking place around 12,000 years ago, or so we thought.
OK, they had said that the pyramids were built around 2,600 BC with the Sphinx dating from around the same time. Then we were told that the Sphinx was actually much older than the Pyramids, with the oldest parts dating back to maybe 7,000 BC.
But how could Neolithic cavemen have constructed something as impressive and ornate as the Sphinx thousands of years before the construction of the Pyramids or even Stonehenge?
Then in 1994, someone found a piece of stone in Turkey and the date of the Sphinx seemed to pale in comparison.
Welcome to Gobekli Tepe, the oldest man made structure so far discovered and built at about the same time we had thought that mud huts were the in place to live!
Situated on a hilltop, the site consists of twenty buried buildings of which four have been excavated. The site has been Carbon 14 dated to 11,000 BC, which is well before the accepted dates for human evolution!
That makes it 13,000 years old and a construction as complex and ornate as Gobekli Tepe in theory can’t exist.
But it does exist and this has forced the archaeological establishment to revamp its thoughts on the ancient world and the people who lived at that time.
Their depth of knowledge far exceeded even the most optimistic of previous assessments.
Who were these people, a lost civilisation?
We know nothing of them, their existence has taken everyone by surprise.
Not least the people who wrote the Bible, which only goes back about 6,000 years.
An even older, old testament?
To put this discovery into perspective, it’s not so long ago that those who know these things were saying that the ancients who lived in Egypt could never have built something like the Sphinx.
Now we have a complex temple site at Gobekli Tepe, which is twice as old as the Sphinx.
Was the earth home to a lost civilisation, were extra-terrestrials responsible or did cavemen really build these monuments?
Someone, or something, keeps moving the goal posts as far as ancient knowledge and ability is concerned.
I have mentioned before, that I have “an informed sourceâ€, a man close to a US three letter agency. He is a physicist and now nothing would surprise me.
A force that can influence the way we live today would have had little difficulty in shaping the ancient world.
But that’s a story for another time!
